If you are an athlete or are involved in any type of sport, you’ve probably heard the term “sports nutrition.” However, many people hear this phrase or even toss it around without really knowing what it means or what it entails. Sports nutrition can be thought of as striving to eat a healthy, balanced, and very specialised diet in order to optimise general nutrition and, of course, athletic performance.
Many athletes work with nutritionists to create viable healthy eating plans with the right mix of amino acids, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and other necessary substances. Many also use healthy products such as vitamins and minerals, supplements, or powders to maximize their health and performance. Finding the right balance of nutrition can allow you to perform better and play longer.
However, you shouldn’t just jump at the first sports nutrition plan you find. In order to ensure a proper diet, you will want to work closely with a nutritionist. There are many nutritionists who specialise in sports nutrition and who can help you find the right balance of foods for your particular sport and your goals. If you don’t have the money to spend on a professional, you can do the research yourself and design and follow a carefully designed sports nutrition regimen to meet your needs.
You can use the food pyramid or other health guidelines to help you to create your balanced diet. However, you’ll most likely need to do more than just eat the right foods in the right amounts to increase your playing abilities. You can talk to your doctor about incorporating dietary supplements into your life. As long as they are used responsibly and in the recommended amounts, they can truly increase your playing power and your endurance. Commonly used products include dietary protein, Creatine, and other forms of natural acid supplements. However, you should be sure to steer clear of anabolic steroids and other dangerous or illegal products. These can cause long term negative health effects and, in the long run, will do just the opposite of what athletes hope for; they will limit your playing ability and possibly even ruin your health.
It is important to remember, as you start out on your journey toward improved health and athletic prowess, that your safety should always be your first priority. Always speak to a doctor before you make any major changes to your diet or before you begin using any substances. Make sure that you do not overuse any products, no matter how “healthy” they may be. The real key here is “everything in moderation.”
